Candlelight March In Memory of Liu Xiaobo (附悼詞 Eulogy)

Remember Liu Xiaobo!Free Liu Xia! Mourning Liu Xiaobo, condolences to his family

July 13, 2017, the famous Chinese writer and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo has passed away. He leaves behind his beloved wife Liu Xia, his family and his country.

From the Democracy Movement of 1989 up to this very day, Liu Xiaobo was incarcerated four times due to his struggle for democracy and justice in China. He sacrificed 13 years of his precious freedom for this cause and suffered in China’s prisons and detention centers. He was scheduled to regain his freedom in 2019, but his battle with liver cancer prevented this dream from being realized.

When Liu Xiaobo was still a young man in the midst of a brilliant academic career, the 1989 Democracy Movement broke out. He returned to Beijing from America, went on hunger strike on June 2, and had the courage to reason with armed soldiers so that some students could safely evacuate Tiananmen Square. Imprisoned and convicted of “counter-revolutionary propaganda and incitement”, he was released in January 1991.

As a survivor of the June 4 massacre, Liu Xiaobo harbored long-lasting guilt. He wrote poems in remembrance of the June 4 victims and was a staunch supporter of the Tiananmen Mothers, helping them to organize and disseminate information. Though under immense pressure, Liu Xiaobo continuously radiated the courageous spirit of June 4.

At the same time, he was an important organizer of groups who fought for the ideals he shared. He helped bring people together, gave a voice to students who supported democracy, and built platforms for writers to spread their message.

In 2008, Liu Xiaobo co-authored the manifesto Charter 08, which promoted a vision for a democratic China under rule of law. On December 10, 2008 he was arrested, and on Christmas Day, December 25,, 2009, he was sentenced to 11 years in prison. In his concluding statement at the trial, he said, “I have no enemies,” refusing to let hatred corrupt his conscience and instead directing his criticism at the lack of freedom of expression in China and its authoritarian system.

Even though Liu Xiaobo experienced harsh, brutal punishment, he never regretted his decisions. He looked forward to the day when political opinion could be openly expressed and every citizen’s opinion valued. He envisioned a China that could embrace different values, ways of thinking, beliefs and politics, all peacefully contending with one another. He envisioned a China in which both majority and minority opinion would receive equal protection and respect, especially dissenting opinion. He envisioned a China where opinion could be expressed and information disseminated freely, where citizens would be free to decide for themselves and fearlessly state their views, instead of remaining silent for fear of political persecution.

Unfortunately, Liu Xiaobo’s vision for China has not yet come to fruition, and his tragic death due to liver cancer means that it was not realized in his lifetime. While his efforts and his sacrifices were continually smeared by the Chinese government, the world did not forget the price this man paid for the freedom of his people. In 2010, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, acknowledgement by the international community of the value of his struggle.

Imprisoned, Liu Xiaobo was unable to personally receive the prize, and so the chair where he was to sit remained eerily empty on the stage of the Nobel ceremony that night. It continues to haunt China’s pretensions to justice and rule of law. His wife Liu Xia was also prohibited from attending the ceremony and has been under strict house arrest since 2009. Liu Xia’s brother was also persecuted. In 2013, he was sentenced to 11 years in prison. It was only when Liu Xia agreed not to file any more complaints related to Liu Xiaobo that her brother was allowed to seek medical treatment abroad. To persecute family members of dissidents is not the mark of a civilized society.

The influence of Liu Xiaobo and Charter 08 has increased. His ideas are ever more relevant. In this age of confrontation and hatred, Liu Xiaobo kept faith in his values and morals, inspiring those in China who yearn for freedom and democracy.

Fighting for Liu Xiaobo’s freedom has been symbolic of fighting for every single person who has been persecuted for political reasons. We continue to fight for the freedom of all.

Liu Xiaobo has left us. He will no longer have to suffer the injustices of our world. We think of Liu Xia at this time, and we hope that she and her family members shall once again taste the sweetness of freedom and be able to live their lives as they wish. We are heartbroken that Liu Xiaobo was not able to see his dream of freedom, fairness and democracy realized in China.

We remember Liu Xiaobo’s lifetime of struggle and sacrifice. This moment is one of the hardest for the democracy movement. Liu Xiaobo’s death has darkened the world immeasurably. It is we who must carry on his vision. We must never forget the price that he paid for all of us and always remember the sacrifices of history’s martyrs. May he rest in peace and look after those of us who continue his struggle, for that struggle for a democratic China is not over. It will one day be realized.

The Alliance stress that family and friends of Liu Xiaobo, and also the general public, have the right to publicly mourn Liu Xiaobo, and any such act of mourning should not be interfered with. We also demand the Chinese Government to stop monitoring the friends and family of Liu Xiaobo.

The Alliance is deeply saddened to hear the shocking news of the passing of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Mr. Liu Xiaobo, and send our most sincere condolencese to Ms. Liu Xia and their family. The Alliance strongly condemns the Chinese Communist Party for failing to respect Mr. Liu Xiaobo’s wish to receive treatment abroad, and for stopping Liu Xiaobo from speaking freely till the day he died. We further demand immediate freedom for Ms. Liu Xia and his family.

Since the 89′ Democratic Movement, Liu Xiaobo had always fought for democracy via non-violent means, leading to repeated imprisonment. In 2008 he was arrested for drafting and signing Charter 08, and was sentenced to 11 years imprisonment the following year. Liu Xiaobo was a man of admirable strength of character, and was willing pay the price of to serving his full sentence in order to defending the people’s right to freedom of expression. After being diagnosed with terminal liver cancer, he had demanded to be treated abroad accompanied by his family. People from both within the country and overseas, and leaders of various governments have urged the Chinese government to comply with Liu Xiaobo’s wish for humanitarian reason. However infuriatingly, the Chinese Communist Party simply kept up its unjustified tight surveillance on Liu Xiaobo and his family, stopping friends from visiting and unilaterally releasing news of Liu Xiaobo’s conditions. It made up all kind of excuses to prevent Liu Xiaobo from leaving the country for treatment.
