“Never Forget June 4” 28th Anniversary long-distance run

After the bloody repression of the June 4 Democracy Movement , the Torch of the Goddess of Democracy was passed from Tiananmen Square to Hong Kong. The spirit lives on, and we won’t give up. We erect the Goddess of Democracy and the Pillar of Shame here. In Hong Kong, we can still publicize the truth about the democractic movement. A single spark can start a prairie fire. Tomorrow, we will do the same in China. The vindication of June 4 must pass along a twisted road before it can be realized. That is the same as the long-distance run; there is a beginning and there must always be an end. Let the old and the young generations all participate. Eventually all the matyrs will rest in peace.

Theme
The Alliance will follow the spirit of the long-distance run: we will never give up. In the spirit of the 1989 pro-democracy movement, we strive for our goal. The route of the run will pass a number of historic landmarks with which we Hong Kong people are very familiar from the 1989 demonstrations and march. This allows us runners, the public and tourists to relive that “Don’t want to remember and dare not forget" moment. This part of the total route is roughly 15 kilometers.

The members of the “June 4 long-distance running team" will start the run from the temporary “June 4 Museum" at 6:20 am. They will run for 13 km and arrive at Times Square in Causeway Bay at around 9:00 am. There, the rest of the runners will join them and finish the run together at the Liaison Office, a total distance of about 28 km. This reminds us that we have sustained our spirit and effort for 28 years to support the Chinese democracy movement, and the spirit will go on.

June 4th Museum Special Exhibition

After operating for two years, the June 4th Museum was closed on 12 July 2016 because of litigation by the owners corporation of the building in which it was located. In spite of its closure, our job of publicizing the historical truth does not stop.We are now searching for a larger space and have started a crowdfunding campaign for the new museum. (Hang Seng Bank Account: 368-286498-001; check payable to the “Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China")

Following the opening of the micro June 4th Museum at the Victoria Park New Year’s Market in February, the Alliance continues with the June 4 Museum Special Exhibition.

Location: Jockey Club Creative Arts Center, 2nd Floor, L205-208
Address: 30 Pak Tin Street, Shek Kip Mei, Kowloon
Date: 30 April – 15 June 2017
Opening hours: Daily from 12 noon to 7 pm

Entrance is free. Donations are welcome.

The special exhibition introduces the history of the 1989 pro-democracy movement and the June 4 massacre in an interactive way and encourages the visitor to think about the relationship between June 4, the individual, Hong Kong and China. We take history as a lesson to discuss how to build a fair and just society.

The museum welcomes schools and groups to make an appointment to visit. We will arrange tour guides to help visitors explore the spirit of the 1989 pro-democracy movement , the people’s pursuit of justice, and the situation currently faced by the family members of June 4 victims.

For further information, please visit the June 4th Museum website (http://64museum.blogspot.hk)

If you have any inquiries, please contact the staff of the June 4th Museum at 2459 6489.

Local Publicity Events

We can also organize exhibitions and show videos about June 4 and the democracy movement and joint lectures for your group, school or organization. The following is a list of resources and videotapes/VCD/DVD which can be borrowed. We hope that through the above activities, participants will understand the causes and consequences of the 1989 pro-democracy movement. Taking history as a lesson, we explore the meaning of establishing a fair and just society, re-establishing the relationship between the individual and the state, and what we can do for the country.

Lecture Series: “An overview of the 20th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Handover”

On 1 July 1997, Hong Kong became a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China. For 20 years, the basis of the Hong Kong system has supposedly been the principle of “one country, two systems". But in recent years the central government has continuously interfered in Hong Kong affairs. Examples are numerous: this year’s Chief Executive Election, the Liaison Office’s repeated interventions, the ever-expanding Communist Party workers’ union, Communist Party penetration into universities, the intimidation of the media into self-censorship, and control of public opinion through acquisition of media organizations.

Just in the past six months, several alarming incidents have occurred. Several candidates were disqualified from running in September 2016 Legislative Council elections on political grounds. The Hong Kong government filed a judicial review application at the High Court to disqualify two elected Legislative Council members in relation to the council’s oath-taking ceremony. The National People’s Congress Standing Committee then reinterpreted Basic Law Article 104 to essentially force Hong Kong’s independent judiciary to disqualify the two. The Hong Kong government then filed a new judicial review application at the High Court to disqualify four more elected Legco members, again over their oath-taking. The saga of the abductions by mainland authorities of people associated with Causeway Bay bookstore rumbled on, as one of the abductees, Gui Minhai, remains in incommunicado detention in an undisclosed location on the mainland.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover. Hong Kong people and the international community are deeply concerned about the implementation of “one country, two systems". This series of lectures will invite different scholars to share their thoughts on various topics such as the Chief Executive election, the role of the pro-Communist Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions and the Liaison Office in Hong Kong, and the manipulation of the media by the Communist Party. Vindicate June 4th! End Dictatorial Rule! The 28th Anniversary of JUNE 4
