Obituary for the Candlelight Vigil on the 29th Anniversary of June 4

That night, you were killed on Tiananmen Square and Chang’an Avenue in Beijing. Since then, every year on that night, we mourn you in Victoria Park, Hong Kong, in a sea of candlelight.

In June, 29 years ago, young students sacrificed their lives with no regrets. The fearless common citizens cried out for a vision of a future democratic China with their flesh and blood but were shot and killed by the totalitarian government. Today, 29 years later, although the tracks of tanks at Muxidi have been filled, the cracks in the stone steps of the Monument to the People’s Heroes have been repaired, and corruption and persecution have been disguised by the illusion of a great era, the gunfire, smoke, blood, and the grief and indignation of the people still vividly remain in our memories.

We firmly recall that the wounds have not healed, the blood has not dried, the pain has not been relieved, the wrong has not been righted, and justice has not been upheld. Of course, we know that authoritarian rulers want to erase memory from the people. Dictators want to rewrite history, and the murderers want to wash away the bloodstains. We fully understand a government that cannot learn from history is hopeless, and a country that does not reflect on its mistakes is bound to sink. But more importantly, we are convinced that the ruthless regime will not last forever but will inevitably fall!

The long river of history has always been turbulent, and the path to democracy has always been rocky. We must admit that the current political situation is very bad, and a shadow of white terror falls over the land. The dictators of the one-party state have been torturing and imprisoning June 4 victims, human rights defenders and dissidents. But the strong will of the people remains indomitable, and resistance has never ceased. This is where our hope remains, with the people.

In this evening’s vigil, you not only participate in a ceremony, or to cherish a feeling, but also to reiterate our promise, perseverance and commitment to pass on your unfulfilled dreams. This evening we protect the candlelight in our hands, not just to light up people’s conscience, but also to radiate the truth of the bloody history of the 1989 democracy movement!

This light will never go out. Your spirits are immortal, and we hope you rest in peace.

要悼念的人會愈來愈多;

對二十九年前死難者的承諾;
對為民主奉獻一生的劉曉波的承諾;

Hong Kong Alliance Declaration of the 2018 June 4 Candlelight Vigil

In recent years, the number of taboos in Hong Kong has increased. The latest is against the slogan, ‘end one-party dictatorship’.

What does ‘end one-party dictatorship’ mean?
Rotation of political parties.
Returning power to the people.
True democracy.

Democracy, this humble and fundamental demand,
Reverberated in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square 29 years ago,
Spurring resistance that swept across the country,
However, it was bloodily suppressed by the one-party dictatorship.

Ten years ago, Charter 08
Called for democracy, constitutionalism and republicanism. It attracted more than 10,000 signatures.
However, under the one-party dictatorship, one of its drafters, Liu Xiaobo, was sentenced to 11 years in prison and died in custody. Not even his ashes remain.

This demand blossomed under the yellow umbrellas four years ago.
Many people in China supported Hong Kong people on the streets.
However, under the one-party dictatorship, not only was universal suffrage denied, mainlanders who supported Hong Kong are still in prison.

If one-party dictatorship continues,
Similar tragedies will happen.
There will be more and more people to mourn.

If one-party dictatorship continues,
China will not have real democracy.
Hong Kong will not have real freedom.

To end this cycle,
One-party dictatorship must end.

But instead they want to make ‘end one-party dictatorship’ taboo. They want us to accept this reality: China is under the rule of the Communist Party, and the regime is going to last forever.

We must clearly tell them,
We will never accept!

We cannot give you all a road map,
That, if followed, step by step will end the dictatorship.
But we know what allows the dictatorship to continue
Is personal silence, obedience and compromise.

Therefore to end one-party dictatorship,
We at least must dare to stand up and shout,
We want to end one-party dictatorship.

In the mainland, many people have been imprisoned for saying this.
In Hong Kong, are we ready to pay the price for saying it?

Whether you like it or not, in this new era,
There is a price to pay to tell the truth.
Pursuit of justice will be punished
In an era in which it is forbidden to say the emperor has no clothes.

Not everyone is a revolutionary.
But everyone can be a ‘person’,
Faithful to her conscience and the facts,
and refuse to live in fear.

All of you who dare to come here today,
hold up the candlelight,
remember those who were suppressed by one-party dictatorship.
Thank you for your courage.

Don’t belittle yourselves.
Those who dare to say no, dare to persist, dare to disobey,
are showing the world
The dictatorship is not unstoppable,
Revolt is not impossible.

The avalanche relies on power from every snowflake.

The five operational goals of the Alliance are not just slogans.
They are a promise,

A promise to those killed 29 years ago,
A promise to Liu Xiaobo, who devoted his life to democracy,
A promise to those who sacrificed for democracy in China and Hong Kong.

We must continue the unfinished task.

Release the dissidents! Vindicate the 1989 pro-democracy movement! Demand accountability for the June 4 massacre! End one-party dictatorship! Build a democratic China!
Mourn June 4! Resist authoritarianism!

Speech of Di Mengqi, member of Tiananmen Mothers

Citizens of Hong Kong and all who are attending the candlelight vigil,

I am Wang Hongqi’s mother. I am 72 years old. My name is Di Mengqi. I am a retired worker from the fifth canteen of Beijing University.

June 3, 1989 was a Saturday. My son, Wang Hongqi was riding a bicycle on his way to work. He was a worker at the Beijing Leather Products Factory. His workplace was very close to the Muxidi. He always left work at 6 p.m. That day, he passed Muxidi on his way home just as the troops were forcing their way through through. They fired ruthlessly and indiscriminately at passers-by on both sides of the road. My son was shot while pushing his bike. The bullet entered his body near his armpit, went through his chest, and hit his heart. He died instantly, his blood flowing in streams.

My son fell. My neighbour was there by chance there. He knew my son. He and others took my son to the nearby Naval Hospital. He came to notify us at around 10 p.m. that evening.

When his father and I arrived at the hospital, we asked where the wounded and killed were. Someone told us the dead were in the morgue. We went there and saw many bodies lying on the ground. As our son was among the first sent to the hospital, he was placed in cold storage. I saw my boy. He lay there pale and quiet. Perhaps his blood was already all drained. His body was soft and there wasn’t much blood on his clothes. His father and I dared not confirm his identity. We still hoped that wasn’t our son. Like me, my son had a mole close to the hairline on his forehead. He had it from birth. When I saw the mole and the clothes that my son wore to work that morning, I collapsed onto the floor and couldn’t get up.

I held my son’s body and cried in grief and indignation: My boy, when you left home for work this morning, you bid me goodbye, smiling as you always did. And it took just a matter of hours for you to never be able to come back again. What an awful death! As your father and mother, we could never have imagined such cruel and cold thing could occur, and we can never accept it!

On June 4, I informed his workplace. They followed up. The body was sent to the funeral home in Babaoshan for cremation on the 5th. I was sad and so were all his supervisors and colleagues at the factory. They could not believe this was true.

After graduating from junior secondary school, my son entered a vocational school to study leather technology. In 1989, he was 19 and had been at his factory for only 6 months. He was passionate, diligent and enthusiastic. He worked during the day and continued his studies in an evening course at the university. He had only one year left before he graduated. His classmates came to see us at home. They all testified that my son was shot dead on his way home from work. His workplace also issued a testimony to that effect.

Today, we are witnessing the 29th anniversary of the June 4 tragedy. As a mother, I hope the state can step forward to clarify its stance on the massacre. If not, I will roll in my grave! Who did my son offend on his way home from work? Shot dead for no reason! How can I swallow this!

Like the other members of the Tiananmen Mothers, my husband and I have a common wish: we demand the government state its position. It was a criminal act by the State. We demand that the truth of the June 4 tragedy be revealed and that compensation be paid to the victims’ families as well as legal accountability for those responsible for the massacre! We want our dignity back as human beings! We want fairness and justice!

Speech of Li Wenzu, wife of lawyer Wang Quanzhang, detained in the 709 Crackdown

Dear friends in Hong Kong, I am Li Wenzu. I am the wife of Wang Quanzhang, a human rights lawyer in China. In just one more month, my husband Wang Quanzhang will have been disappeared for three years. The 709 Crackdown has been a disaster for human rights lawyers in China. With concern and attention from around the world, including from Hong Kong, most of the victims of the crackdown are now released or their situation is known. Wang Quanzhang is the only one left about whom there has been no information, not even whether he is alive or dead. I hereby make the following appeal: I want the lawyer I have appointed to meet with Wang Quanzhang so that I can know of his situation. I am determined and confident that I will be able to persevere until Quanzhang is free to come home, until the day when human rights in China are thoroughly transformed for the better!

June 4 was a day of disaster for the People’s Republic of China. We are grateful and touched that friends in Hong Kong have continued to commemorate it. I thank you as well for your relentless concern for the victims of the 709 Crackdown. Thank you.

齊共記起血淚情,待昭雪;

心中深處始終也記憶那年那夕;
深深相信始終會變真某年某夕;

要悼念的人會愈來愈多;

對二十九年前死難者的承諾;
對為民主奉獻一生的劉曉波的承諾;

We thank you Hong Kong people for all of your support!

Thanks to all who are here at the vigil for your respect for life, for your compassion, and for your unyielding resoluteness!

Thank you.

齊共記起血淚情,待昭雪;

心中深處始終也記憶那年那夕;
深深相信始終會變真某年某夕;
